Pancake

Pancake喜歡所有人,包括那匹馬。他真是個快樂的靈魂。
The Dog Who Changed My Direction
There are moments in life that seem ordinary when they happen.
Only years later do we realize they quietly changed everything.
For me, one of those moments began with a dog named Pancake.
When I moved to Chicago to pursue my Master of Fine Arts, getting a dog was the last thing that made practical sense. My rental agreement clearly prohibited pets, and my days were consumed by studio work, research, and graduate school.
And yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to find a Standard Poodle.
There was no logical reason.
Only a quiet certainty I couldn't explain.
I drove an hour to meet a litter of puppies.
Among them was one golden boy with soft curls and gentle eyes.
The moment I met him, something felt strangely familiar.
Not excitement.
Recognition.
I named him Pancake.
Looking back, I sometimes wonder whether I chose him at all.
Keeping him should have been impossible.
My landlord was known for strictly enforcing the building's no-pets policy.
When he came for an inspection, I prepared myself for the worst.
Instead, Pancake walked over with a toy in his mouth, wagging his tail as if he had known this meeting would end well.
The landlord laughed.
He bent down to pet him.
Then he did something he had never done before.
He made an exception.
At the time, it felt like simple good luck.
Today, I see it as one of the first reminders that life doesn't always unfold according to our plans.
Sometimes it unfolds according to relationships.
Pancake followed me almost everywhere.
He spent long hours in my graduate studio, where classmates and professors welcomed him as if he belonged there.
He accompanied me to gallery openings, quietly greeting strangers with the same warmth he greeted friends.
People began calling me "Pancake's mom."
I laughed every time I heard it.
But something else was happening.
Without realizing it, he was changing me.
He taught me to notice.
To slow down.
To see how a calm presence could transform the people around him.
One day I found myself asking a question that refused to leave.
What if there were more dogs like Pancake in the world?
At the time, it was only a passing thought.
Years later, that single question would become Lake Sai Sanctuary.
What Pancake Continues to Teach Me
Looking back, I don't believe Lake Sai began with land.
It didn't begin with breeding.
It didn't begin with a business plan.
It began with one relationship that quietly changed the direction of my life.
Some animals come to comfort us.
Some come to protect us.
And some arrive carrying a question that will shape the rest of our lives.
For me, that question arrived with a golden Standard Poodle named Pancake.
