The Day I Stopped Drawing
I was ten years old.
One afternoon in drawing class, our assignment was simple:
Draw your hands and your feet.
I remember taking off my socks, looking carefully at my own feet, and drawing them with complete attention.
I enjoyed it.
For the first time, I felt that maybe I had done something well.
When everyone finished, the teacher walked around the classroom, holding up our drawings one by one.
Then she stopped at mine.
She lifted my paper in front of the whole class and said,
"What are these?"
"They look like sausages."
The room laughed.
I don't remember what happened during the rest of the class.
But I remember what happened afterward.
I stopped drawing.
Not for a week.
Not for a month.
For almost twenty years.
By then, art had slowly disappeared from my life.
School became about grades.
Examinations.
Achievement.
There was less and less room for curiosity, imagination, or making something simply because it wanted to be made.
I assumed that chapter of my life had ended.

Years later, after moving to the United States, something unexpected happened.
For the first time, I entered a studio where I was not asked to copy the "right" answer.
I was invited to explore.
To experiment.
To make mistakes.
To trust what I saw.
Slowly, almost without realizing it, I picked up a pencil again.
Then color.
Then clay.
Then space.
The creativity I thought I had lost had never disappeared.
It had simply been waiting for permission to return.
That experience changed my life.
I eventually became an artist.
Earned both my BFA and MFA.
Exhibited my work internationally.
But those are not the most important parts of the story.
The important part is this:
One sentence from a teacher closed a door for twenty years.
Another kind of learning quietly opened it again.
That is why Heart Color Academy exists.
Not to teach people how to draw.
Not to judge talent.
Not to create perfect artwork.
But to create a place where curiosity is welcomed, mistakes are part of learning, and creativity can safely return.
Because I have learned that creativity is not a luxury.
It is one of life's creative forces.
It brings light where words cannot reach.
It nourishes the soul.
And sometimes...
the first line we draw is not the beginning of a picture.
It is the beginning of coming home to ourselves.
Art is not the goal.
Art is the doorway.

Heart Color Academy is guided by Suhela Ling-An Fang—artist, educator, bilingual author, intuitive practitioner, and founder of Tianxin.
Her work brings together visual art, animal wisdom, symbolic perception, contemplative practice, and decades of teaching to create spaces where creativity becomes a way of seeing rather than a performance.
