The Dog Who Never Stopped Listening

NuNu

NuNu lost his hearing, and the invisible conversation that love continues to have.

NuNu lost his hearing, and the invisible conversation that love continues to have.

Beloved NuNu loved hiking, athletic, obedience.

How do souls continue speaking?

The Dog Who Never Stopped Listening

There are some animals whose gift is courage.

Some arrive to teach patience.

Some protect.

NuNu came to teach joy.

From the day he arrived at Lake Sai Farm, he lived as though every morning deserved a celebration.

He greeted each person with the same wholehearted excitement.

Every walk was an adventure.

Every visitor was already his friend.

Every ordinary day was, to him, the best day of his life.

If happiness could have taken the shape of a French Bulldog, it would have looked exactly like NuNu.

Everyone's Uncle

NuNu came to us from Warsaw, Poland.

As a puppy, he struggled with digestive problems, and for a while we weren't sure how strong he would become.

Then, quietly, everything changed.

His stomach settled.

His body grew stronger.

The little puppy we had worried about became one of the healthiest dogs on our farm.

He hiked mountain trails beside Standard Poodles whose legs were twice as long as his.

He spent weekends greeting people at farmers' markets, collecting smiles wherever he went.

But his favorite place was always the nursery.

When puppies were born, NuNu somehow believed they belonged to him.

What surprised me even more was that their mothers seemed to agree.

They welcomed him into the whelping box without hesitation.

He would carefully kiss each tiny puppy, curl beside them, and fall asleep while little bodies climbed over his back.

Around our farm, everyone began calling him Uncle NuNu.

He never asked to be loved.

Love simply gathered around him.

The Day Everything Changed

When I returned home from a long trip, NuNu greeted me exactly as he always had.

His whole body wagged.

His eyes shone.

Nothing seemed different.

A few days later, he became critically ill.

The veterinarians searched for an answer.

Blood work.

X-rays.

Examinations.

Everything looked normal.

Yet I could feel something slipping beyond our reach.

After helping so many animals recover through difficult illnesses, I found myself standing beside the one life I could not save.

Sometimes love gives us knowledge.

Sometimes it asks us to accept that knowledge is not enough.

NuNu left far sooner than any of us expected.

The farm became strangely quiet.

It wasn't because he had been the loudest dog.

It was because joy itself seemed to have gone missing.

A Different Way of Listening

Months later, Anthony mentioned something almost in passing.

"I think NuNu had already lost most of his hearing."

I laughed at first.

I thought he was simply being a typical French Bulldog—stubborn whenever he didn't feel like listening.

Looking back, I realized how much I had misunderstood.

His ears may have been fading long before I noticed.

But somehow, he had never stopped hearing me.

When I spoke softly, he looked into my eyes before I finished the sentence.

When I was sad, he quietly rested beside me without being called.

When I was happy, he celebrated before anyone else knew why.

He had never depended only on sound.

He had always been listening with relationship.

After he left this world, I still found myself talking to him.

"NuNu..."

"I miss you."

"I love you."

Those words no longer reached a pair of ears.

Yet somehow, they never felt unanswered.

Love has never required sound in order to recognize itself.

What NuNu Taught Me

Before NuNu, I thought listening belonged to the ears.

NuNu taught me that true listening belongs to the heart.

Words are only one language.

Silence is another.

A gentle touch.

A familiar gaze.

A body quietly choosing to stay beside another.

These, too, are conversations.

Sometimes we spend our lives believing that connection depends on what we can hear.

NuNu showed me something much gentler.

The ears may grow quiet.

The voice may disappear.

Even a lifetime together may come to an end.

But when two souls have truly recognized one another,

love never stops listening.
