When the Heart Stops Calling

Annjou

For days, Annjou called across the fields for the herd she had lost. This is the story of how a grieving mare stopped searching—and taught me that home begins long before we realize we've arrived.

Where do we find home after loss?

When the Heart Stops Calling

She Arrived Looking Back

Before I owned a farm, I already had the horse.

Annjou was my dream mare long before I had a place to bring her home. I bought her and later bred her to a world champion stallion while I still had no land of my own, trusting that somehow life would make room for what had already arrived.

When Annjou stepped off the trailer, she carried more than a new halter and a new address.

She carried loss.

For days, she stood at the fence calling.

Morning.

Afternoon.

Night.

Again and again, she called for the herd she had left behind.

To us, moving a horse is paperwork, trailers, and ownership.

To a horse, it is something much simpler.

Her family was gone.

A Heart That Could Not Arrive

No one could get close to Annjou.

We couldn't even put a halter on her.

She held every part of her body away from human touch, tense and watchful, as though she were still waiting for someone else to come back for her.

I invited two experienced horsewomen to help.

Annjou refused them too.

It would have been easy to describe her as stubborn.

Difficult.

Untrained.

But none of those words explained what I was seeing.

They described her behavior.

They did not describe her heart.

Seeing What Was Missing

When I worked with Annjou through SRT, something unexpected became clear.

She wasn't resisting me.

She was grieving.

Everything changed when I stopped asking,

"How do I make her cooperate?"

and began asking,

"What has she lost?"

That single question changed the way I stood beside her.

Healing did not happen because I became stronger.

It began because someone finally recognized what she had been carrying.

Slowly, something inside her softened.

Her body no longer felt like a locked gate.

She allowed me to stand beside her.

Then she let me brush her face.

Later, her neck.

Eventually, the rest of her body.

Because she was pregnant, she also needed to become comfortable with gentle touch around her udder before her foal arrived.

For a long time, she guarded that part of herself completely.

Then, one afternoon...

she lowered her head.

It was not surrender.

It was permission.

The Morning She Stopped Calling

The greatest change did not happen when she accepted my touch.

It happened a few days later.

One morning, I walked outside and listened.

The pasture was quiet.

Annjou was no longer calling across the fields.

Not because she had forgotten.

Not because she had given up.

Something inside her had finally settled.

The place that had once felt unfamiliar had begun to feel safe.

She had stopped searching.

Soon afterward, her beautiful colt, Krsnna, entered the world.

Looking back now, I realize the order of my life was nothing like the order I had planned.

First came the mare.

Then healing.

Then new life.

Only afterward came the land.

What Annjou Taught Me

I used to believe that home was a place.

A farm.

A pasture.

A fence with your name on it.

Annjou taught me that home begins somewhere much quieter.

It begins the moment the heart no longer has to keep searching.

Healing is not forgetting where we've been.

It is discovering that we are finally safe enough to arrive where we are.

Years have passed since those first days together.

Today, Annjou is my soul mare.

When I look at her standing in the pasture, there is a light about her that wasn't there when we first met.

Sometimes people ask me what changed.

I don't think it was only her.

I think we found home together.
